Last night, Jay, Sally (via text) and I were talking about if there was a fire in the house what would you save. So this is mine. I will preface this by saying that my engagement ring and silver are at the top of the list. But my third is my orange Eames chair.
The story behind the Eames chair. I was interning in DC for a year (1997-1998) and was making $10/hour. I had a great aparment in an old Art Deco building right in the middle of Dupont and was paying about 3/4 of my monthly paycheck for it. So basically, I was poor as a mouse for the entire stint up there in the city. Out of the blue, I got a letter in the mail from my grandmother, Jo Jo, and she had included some money. $100! I had been visiting this vintage store every weekend for months...eyeballing this chair...and wanting it sooo bad. Well, instead of going out to buy groceries my friend Kevin and I headed down to the store to buy the chair. I toted it on my head the 12 blocks back to my apartment, and it claimed the prime spot by the window.
When I finally came home (Jackson, MS) Jo Jo came over to visit. She asked what I bought with the money. And I told her..."I bought a chair!" She envisioned a nice plush chair with an ottoman, but then I told her it was orange and fiberglass..she frowned. Why on earth would I do something like that! Well, I am an Eames addict and this was my very first piece. And it would be sitting out on the curb with me if our house ever went up in flames.
