The Department

My dad worked for the Department of Agriculture for 37 years. He spent the most part of his career serving as Deputy Commissioner under Commissioner Jim Buck Ross (1968-1995)and Commissioner Lester Spell (1995-present). My dad took great pride in his job and the many great friendships he created throughout the state of Mississippi.

Commissioner Spell sent us all a letter a few weeks ago. He spoke about how he didn't know how he would have made it through the first tough years in office without my dad's help and guidance. And what a special friendship they had for so many years.

I can't even count how many times I have had someone hear my last name and ask me if I was Chris's daughter. And then for them to go on and tell me what a great man he was and how honest and forthright he was with everyone. It always made me so proud. That is honestly one of the reasons why I kept my last name. I appreciate all that it represents. My dad's hard work and loyalty. To his family and his job.

In honor and remembrance of my dad, Commissioner Spell, created a living memorial to The Avenue of Magnolias. This is a project that has been long going in the Department, and my dad had some help in it. At all the entrances into the state of Mississippi or at any prominent interstate interchanges, you will see magnolia trees planted along the road. Well, my dad's entrance is I-59 leading in to Hattiesburg.

If you ever are on that bit of road, I hope you think of him.
